Five Tips to Unleash Learning Potential

A resilient, engaged workforce needs to constantly be learning and growing to stay ahead of the competition. However, it’s easy to shrug off learning when faced with limited time and budget constraints.Time to stop that old-school thinking. There are many options for learning that can meet the needs of a team.  Here are five:

  1. Stretch assignments: Ask employees with potential what type of assignment would they like to learn but know it is out of their experience and/or comfort zone.  Create just such a stretch assignment for them to show what they can do. Make sure you set up frequent check-ins so the employee can ask for help and you can encourage progress.
  2. M-learning:  Think of this as learning on the go—with a mobile device. Specifically, ask a subject matter expert to record a short lesson—no more than five minutes—that explains a process, a procedure, or a number of factoids related to the job, the industry, etc. Upload that video to a service like Dropbox and make it available for employees to download. Perfect for short busts with uninterrupted time.
  3. Industry offerings:  Industries often offer newsletters, case studies, trend analysis, and white papers that are germane to a profession. To make such reading more interactive, consider putting people in a very small group and once a month, ask each member of that group to report out what they learned from one of the industry offerings.
  4. Book clubs: This is an expanded version of the industry offerings. An optional club, these members would read a book that is relevant to the business, to leadership, to goals, or trends.  And then, once a month, the members would discuss the book. There are so many excellent books on the market. My book, Your Resiliency GPS was used by an Air Force trainer who wanted to help soldiers prepare for duty stations in the Middle East.
  5. Local resources: For example, to learn public speaking, Toastmaster chapters abound in many cities and some can actually be started within a company.  Community colleges offer inexpensive extension courses for adults.Grab some of the course offerings and you will be amazed at the wide array of classes.

School is never out for the learner.  It's just that “school” can be offered in many different way.
