Are You Giving Up Your Vacation This Summer?

The Conference Board recently surveyed Americans asking how many of them would take a vacation in the next six months. The results were shocking: only 39 percent (the lowest in 30 years) said they would dim the office lights, close the door and slip off to sip rum drinks in coconuts sometime in the next six months.

Studies have found that while most Americans would choose more vacation time over a higher salary, the reality is that we don't take advantage of time off. Ezra Klein, writing in the LA TIMES on "the reason we work too hard" found thatthe average male is working 100 hours more a year than in 1970 and the average woman 200 hours more!!

In a recent Bloomberg article, “Vacation-Phobic Americans Donate a Million Years of Work Annually,” (June 30, 2014), writer Ben Steverman commented that the American workplace culture has developed into a mix of job insecurity and sincere workplace devotion which has led to about 429 million unused vacation days per year nationally, according to a 2014 study by Oxford Economics.
